Counterintuitives

of Leadership

  • Speed kills.

  • Your "To-Do" List has less power than your "To-Don't" List.

  • It matters more that you decide than what you decide.

  • They need your best, not your most.

  • Leaders are no longer achievers. (They build achievers).

  • Don't be perfect. Superman has no friends.

  • Never be the smartest person in the room.

of Teamship

  • Alone is fast; together is far.

  • Conflict is good. And necessary.

  • Take solutions to your boss and problems to your team (not the reverse).

  • A culture of discipline is better than a tyrant who disciplines.

  • Within the solution to the problem is often the creation of the next problem.

  • Though information is like oxygen, determined leaders regulate the info and pressure their teams experience.

of Change

  • We slow down to speed up.

  • “They” don’t have to change. We do.

  • The objective is not change. It is an environment that thrives in change.

  • The best change leadership starts with what isn’t changing.

  • It is not about power. It is about influence.

  • Fear-based change is just fear.

  • In hard change, facts won’t matter.

  • It is not: think, change. It is: feel, change.

  • During the change, it is less about talking and more about listening.

  • People need more than to be heard. They need to feel heard.

In all of my twenty+ years in university administration, I never encountered an executive coach like Mark. He’s helped build my skills in a manner that one does not find in formal leadership training. As an experienced coach and former university dean and president, he’s lived many relatable experiences and has been able to “poke the bear” and help me learn from my mistakes as well as my successes. All of this backed by his writings, observations, learned theories and practice. What I have learned has helped both my life at work and outside work. Anyone seeking to excel as an administrator in a time of change should be lucky enough to have a coach like Mark.
